Nigerian music sensation Davido has taken legal action against a failed April Fools’ joke that sparked a major uproar.
The prank, which falsely claimed that the Afrobeats star had been detained in Kenya for possessing cocaine on his private jet, drew swift condemnation from Davido.
In a statement posted on social media, the 31-year-old singer vehemently denied the allegations, asserting, “I have never been arrested anywhere in the world, be it Nigeria, my home in America, or any other country I’ve visited during my career.”
The fictitious story, initially circulated by Kenyan media, quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting an avalanche of inquiries directed at Davido.
The backlash was so severe that Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) publicly debunked the rumors, branding them as “Fake News.”
Davido, who had just concluded successful performances in Uganda and Kenya, reassured his fans of his innocence, stating, “I completed my scheduled shows and returned home to Nigeria without any legal issues.”
Expressing his displeasure at the dissemination of false accusations, Davido declared his intention to pursue legal action against the media outlets responsible for perpetuating the misinformation.
Despite the outcry, the Kenyan media has yet to respond to Davido’s legal threats.
While many Kenyans condemned the ill-conceived prank, some on social media have expressed hopes for an amicable resolution to the situation.
