Ofcom Investigating OnlyFans As Children Access Adult Content

Ofcom is currently investigating OnlyFans amid concerns regarding insufficient measures to prevent minors from accessing explicit content on the platform.

OnlyFans, recognized for its subscription-based model where creators share various content, notably sexual material, is under scrutiny by the regulatory body. Ofcom suspects that the platform isn’t adequately preventing individuals under 18 from accessing porn.

In response, OnlyFans stated it collaborates closely with Ofcom to enhance online safety standards. A company representative explained to the sources that a technical issue had occurred, described as a “coding configuration issue,” affecting certain age thresholds on the site. However, OnlyFans assured that these thresholds were consistently set above 18. They also emphasized that, upon discovering the reporting error, they promptly rectified it and informed Ofcom.

Ofcom’s investigation aims to ascertain whether OnlyFans has failed to implement effective age verification methods to prevent minors from accessing restricted material, including pornography. Furthermore, the regulator will evaluate whether OnlyFans provided accurate and comprehensive information in response to their inquiries.

Since November 2020, Ofcom has been overseeing various video sharing platforms operating in the UK, including OnlyFans, Twitch, TikTok, Snapchat, and Vimeo. The regulator ensures these platforms comply with national laws and regulations, particularly concerning safeguarding measures to shield minors from content potentially detrimental to their physical, mental, or moral well-being.
