A women’s rugby squad hailing from Sheffield is gathering funds to compete in a national cup final at the revered home ground of the sport.
Sheffield Tigers Women, established in 2021, are set to vie for the Women’s Junior Cup final against Thurrock Ladies II at Twickenham Stadium on Sunday, May 12.
The grassroots team aims to collect approximately £5,000 to finance the journey of a 30-member squad to the capital city.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, Captain Charlie Mucklow, 24, remarked on the overwhelming backing they’ve garnered thus far.
Within hours of its inception on Thursday evening, a fundraising page had already amassed over £2,300 by Friday afternoon.
Director of rugby Liam Wallace hailed the feat of reaching a national final within three years of the team’s formation as a significant accomplishment. He emphasized the camaraderie among the players, describing them as a close-knit and cohesive unit.
Charlie, who co-founded the club alongside her friend Philippa Mills, reflected on the journey from a humble aspiration a couple of years ago to the formation of a robust rugby community.
She highlighted the dedication and unity that propelled them to the prestigious opportunity to play at Twickenham, a dream cherished by many players.
For Charlie, who engages in sports administration by day and commenced her rugby journey at 17, the prospect of competing at England Rugby’s headquarters is particularly meaningful.
Playing their home matches at Dore Moor, the Tigers currently hold the third position in the Women’s National Championship 2, which constitutes the fifth tier of women’s rugby union in England.
Their opponents in the final, also competing in the fifth tier, clinched victory in their league this season.
Asserting confidence in their abilities, Liam expressed optimism about their prospects on match day.
