“Gogglebox personality George Gilbey has passed away at the age of 40,” confirmed a spokesperson for the show.
Gilbey, known for his appearances on the Channel 4 series alongside his mother Linda McGarry and stepfather Pete McGarry, who passed away in 2021 at 71, tragically met his demise following a work-related incident.
The reality star also gained recognition for his participation in the 14th edition of Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, where he made it to the final round.
A representative for the show expressed, “George was an integral part of the Gogglebox family for eight seasons alongside his mother Linda and stepfather Pete. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Linda and George’s loved ones during this difficult period. The family has requested privacy.”
Essex Police responded to an incident in Shoebury, Southend-on-Sea, on Wednesday, where Gilbey was involved.
According to a police spokesperson, “We were alerted to an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at approximately 10 a.m. this morning (March 27), where a man working at height had a fatal fall and sustained injuries. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were dispatched. Regrettably, the man passed away at the scene. We are collaborating with relevant authorities, including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The area remains cordoned off.”
Gilbey became part of the acclaimed show during its second season in 2013 but was subsequently dropped in 2014 when he opted to join Celebrity Big Brother. However, the family later rejoined the series.
Hailing from Essex, the reality star participated in the Channel 5 reality show alongside notable figures such as The Hills star Stephanie Pratt and American actor Gary Busey, who emerged as the winners of the series.
Representatives for Gilbey and the HSE have been contacted for statements regarding the incident.
