Felicity Jones And Jonathan Bailey Exit Comedy Film ‘Maria’

Felicity Jones and Jonathan Bailey are no longer set to star in Simon Amstell’s comedy film “Maria,” as confirmed by news.

The production is currently paused due to issues with the cast’s schedules, compounded by last year’s Hollywood strikes. However, a source indicates that Amstell is in discussions to revive the project, which made its debut at Cannes two years ago.

Jones was slated to play the lead role of Maria, a woman grappling with aging and navigating a challenging relationship with her terminally ill father. The storyline reveals Maria’s unconventional relationship with her stepbrother, Raffy. Jonathan Bailey, known for his role in “Bridgerton,” was set to portray Maria’s boyfriend, while Jason Isaacs was cast as her father.

It is understood that the film, originally planned to commence production in 2022, encountered its first setback when Bailey withdrew from the project to pursue another opportunity. Although Isaacs remained committed, Jones eventually also exited the film. Efforts to recast the roles were impeded by last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike. Meanwhile, Amstell, the writer and director of “Maria” (a sequel to his 2018 film “Benjamin”), became occupied with other ventures.

Representatives for Amstell and sales agent Independent Entertainment declined to comment. However, sources suggest that the creative team remains hopeful about resurrecting the film with a fresh cast.

Jones is lined up to star opposite Joel Edgerton in Clint Bentley’s feature “Train Dreams,” while Bailey is set to appear alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in “Wicked.” Isaacs has committed to “White Lotus” Season 3.
