Sam Altman: AI Is Not Good For Making Decisions In Life-Death Situations

CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, said in his address to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland that no matter how advanced artificial intelligence will become, it should be a human decision to plan “what should happen in the world” as AI was “good at something but not good at a life and death situation”.

“Humans know what other humans want. Humans are going to have better tools. We’ve had better tools before, but we are still very focused on each other”, he said.

AI is “a system that is sometimes right, sometimes creative, often totally wrong – you actually don’t want that to drive your car. But you are happy for it to help you brainstorm what to write about your help you with code that you get the check”.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), 40% of jobs around the world will be affected by artificial intelligence. AI is playing a huge role in creating income inequality in the near future.

Altman in WEF said that AI is helping people to be more productive, and people know the things they can use artificial intelligence for and the things for which they should not use it. He said that generative AI helps in providing people with “better tools” and “access to a lot more capability”.

Taking a realistic approach, Altman also said, “I think it’s good that people are a afraid of the downsides of this technology. I think it’s good that we are talking about it. I think it’s good that we and others are being held to a high standard.”

Different meeting sessions on “AI” are being held in Favor this year for analyzing the impact technology has on jobs and the economy. Salesforce CEO of OpenAI, Marc Benioff, said, “AI was not at a point of replacing human beings but rather augmenting them.”

Altman said that there is a huge difference between GPT-3 and GPT-4, the main difference being how the particular AI can change itself according to the given conditions. He also added that the competition is not about inventing bigger technologies; “we’re going to need to invent new things”.
