Surrey is now boasting the second-largest film studio globally, with Amazon MGM Studios and Netflix firmly rooted in occupancy, Shepperton Studios confirms.
Amazon MGM Studios has secured nine fresh stages, while Netflix is poised to take on an additional eight alongside its existing lease of 14 stages.
Under the umbrella of the Pinewood Group, Shepperton Studios reveals that its recent expansion has elevated its stature to encompass a total of 31 purpose-built sound stages.
Paul Golding, Chairman of Pinewood Group, expressed delight: “We’re immensely pleased to inaugurate our new state-of-the-art facilities at Shepperton Studios and witness the enduring commitment of Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios to both the studios and the UK.”
Shepperton Studios boasts an impressive portfolio, contributing to projects such as Mary Poppins Returns, the acclaimed 1917, and the cinematic adaptation of Matilda the Musical, among numerous others.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commended the decision of content producers to establish long-term roots in the UK, citing it as a testament to the government’s support for the nation’s screen sector.
Sunak noted that Pinewood Group now reigns as the largest studio complex in Europe, further solidifying the UK’s position as the world’s second-largest production hub, surpassed only by Hollywood.
An expansion greenlit by Spelthorne Borough Council in 2019 has substantially augmented the site, now spanning 1.5 million square feet (139,354 square meters).
Anna Mallett, Vice President of Production EMEA/UK at Netflix, underscored the UK’s significance as the company’s foremost production hub outside North America.
Mallett stated, “Since 2020, we have injected over $6 billion into the UK, birthing hits like Sex Education, The Crown, and Bridgerton. The completion of Shepperton will propel us to expand our presence even further, ushering in extraordinary new shows, employment opportunities, and economic growth.
