Airbnb Implements Global Ban On Indoor Surveillance Cameras

Airbnb has announced a global prohibition on the use of security cameras inside rental properties, slated to take effect at the end of the upcoming month. This policy alteration is aimed at streamlining regulations concerning security cameras and upholding the privacy of guests, according to the online rental platform.

The decision follows previous concerns raised by Airbnb users regarding indoor surveillance cameras. “These changes were made in consultation with our guests, hosts, and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community,” stated Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships.

Downs further added, “As the majority of listings on Airbnb do not report having a security camera, this update is expected to impact a smaller subset of listings on the platform.”

Under Airbnb’s current regulations, security cameras are permissible in communal areas such as living rooms and hallways, provided their presence is clearly indicated in the property’s listing. The updated policy extends to banning outdoor cameras directed inward and prohibits the placement of surveillance cameras in private spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms.

Nevertheless, the revised rules still permit the utilization of doorbell cameras and noise monitors in communal areas, mandating their disclosure on the property’s listing page. Airbnb aims to strike a balance between hosts’ need to monitor property security and addressing concerns such as unauthorized gatherings while upholding guest privacy.

The announcement coincides with a recent episode of the US comedy show Saturday Night Live, wherein a spoof Airbnb commercial included a joke about a concealed camera in a toilet. The skit has garnered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
