Deadly Fire Ravages Residential Complex In Spain’s Valencia

According to reports from emergency services, around ten people became victims of a huge fire that arose in a residential apartment block in Valencia, Spain. The fire started in a 14-story apartment block and started to engulf an adjacent building in the Campanar neighborhood of Valencia.

In the videos and images being captured and shared, one can easily see the firefighters struggling to rescue the people trapped on their balconies. The fire has not been extinguished yet. In addition to the ten people who died in the incident, over a dozen people were injured, including a young child. Six firefighters also got injured while trying to save others. More than twenty firefighters are still fighting the flames while urging other citizens to stay away from the area.

According to a report published by a newspaper, the manager of the apartment block building told them that around 450 residents were living in the 138-flat building, which is on fire now.

Many residents on the upper floors were saved by using cranes. A witness claimed to have seen the firefighters trying to rescue a teenager from the first floor.

After the incident took place, many people started questioning the material being used in the construction of different buildings in Spain. Esther Puchades, the vice president of the College of Industrial Technical Engineers of Valencia, said that in her inspection of the building recently, she noticed the use of polyurethane material in its exterior, which is highly flammable and is no longer being used because of this very reason.

While reporting about the incident, a person living on the second floor of the building reported to the news channel that the fire spread very fast from the fourth floor, where it started. He said, “The fire spread in a matter of 10 minutes.”

An engineer, David Higuera, told a news channel that the cause of the rapid spread of this fire could be the cladding that was used in the building. He told the media that aluminum plates are used in buildings to form a layer of insulation that is “very good at insulating against heat and cold, but very combustible.”.

The firefighters were called to report at 05:30 pm according to local time, and a field hospital was also established to deal with emergency situations.

Those who lost their houses in the accident will be shifted to safe houses and places until everything is back to normal there.

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. In a post on X, he said, “Dismayed by the terrible fire in a building in Valencia… I want to convey my solidarity to all the people affected and recognition to all the emergency personnel already deployed at the scene.”
